One EIU presidential hopeful in running elsewhere
By KATE HENDERSON, Staff Writer khenderson@jg-tc.com
CHARLESTON -- One of the three finalists for president at Eastern Illinois University is also a presidential finalist at another university.
Sue Kiefer Hammersmith, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, is a finalist for the presidency at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, according to a release from the institution.
William L. Perry, vice provost at Texas A&M University and also a finalist for Eastern president, also was a finalist for president at West Texas A&M University, part of the Texas A&M University system, in 2005. J. Patrick O’Brien was selected for the position.
Hammersmith visited the Edinboro campus in February with four other candidates. On April 10, Hammersmith will have a second interview. The following day, she and the other two candidates will meet with that university’s board. The decision for Edinboro’s president is expected to be made that day.
Hammersmith and Perry, along with Blair Lord, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Eastern since 2001, will be on campus next week to meet with faculty, staff, students and community members in the last step in the interview process.
The on-campus visits will start with Perry.
Perry will be in Charleston on Sunday evening. He will have dinner with members of the EIU Board of Trustees and then will begin a series of sessions with various constituencies on Monday morning. Sessions begin at 9:30 a.m.
Each session carries a “primarily for” title, but Vicki Woodard of university communications said anyone can attend any of the sessions.
Lord will follow the same schedule Tuesday and Wednesday.
Hammersmith will visit campus March 22-23.
Each candidate will have a 4 p.m. open forum for campus and community members.
Eastern began its search for a new president when current President Lou Hencken announced in August that he plans to retire this year. His contract expires June 30.
Hencken has been employed with the university for 41 years, the last six as president.
