What does your iPod have to say about you?
By KATE HENDERSON, Staff Writer khenderson@jg-tc.com
A lot can be learned about a person just by looking at their iPod.
Amber Haskins, a Lake Land College student, is a perfect example. Haskins has a silver iPod Nano, a color she said was chosen because it has dual significance.
“Silver is one of my favorite colors and my nickname is ‘Silver’,” she said.
When Haskins is asked to put her player on “shuffle” mode and play three songs, an interesting combination presented itself. “Life is a Lemon and I Want My Money Back” by Meatloaf was the first song to appear, followed by “Happy Birthday” by New Kids on the Block and finally “Dontcha” by the Pussycat Dolls -- a mishmash of old and new songs from several generations.
Haskins immediately formed a defense about the early ’90s New Kids song.
“That’s music I used to be into,” she claimed. “Those weren’t the best representation of my overall taste. I’m more into Goth metal.”
It’s amazing what can be learned with a simple touch of a button.
One question left looming after the test was, if one doesn’t like certain songs on their iPod, then why are they still there?
Haskins said she probably left hers on because they were on her computer from a long time ago and got transferred when she moved all the songs onto the iPod.
Kevin Fitzgerald, an Eastern Illinois University student, had a similar story.
Fitzgerald’s random plays included “Efilade” by At the Drive-In, “Ageless Beauty” by Stars and “Letter from an Occupant” by The New Pornographers.
Fitzgerald said those are a pretty good representation of his taste and personality.
“The last two are bands I like a lot,” he said. “The first song is something that was inherited.”
Fitzgerald said the first song was one that was transferred onto his iPod from an original MP3 player his brother had given him.
Fitzgerald’s iPod is a black and silver video iPod. He said he chose it for a reason that fits his personality quite well.
“It’s definitely a reflection on my personality,” he said. “Everyone has a white one (iPod), and I can’t stand being like everyone else.”
Songs on Lake Land student Amber Arnold’s iPod fit her. Arnold fired up her silver iPod and set it to shuffle. “Slow Motion” by Nivea, “If You Want Some” by Young Buck and “Fergalicious” by Fergie were the first three songs to play.
“Those are pretty accurate,” Arnold said. “The first two were more rap. I’m not a country kind of listener and it shows that.”
Arnold said her parents bought her the silver iPod and they probably picked it over other colors because they knew she wasn’t the “black type.”
“My sister probably would’ve wanted black,” Arnold said. “She likes rock music and wears the black T-shirts.”
Arnold also said she has several colors of covers and tries to match to her outfits.
Just by looking at three students’ iPods, one could learn that Haskins liked New Kids on the Block at one time -- when she was younger in the early ’90s -- her nickname is Silver, her favorite color is silver and she prefers Goth metal. Fitzgerald isn’t a conformist and has a brother. And Arnold likes current music, has a sister and cares enough about fashion to match her iPod to her outfit.
All of that from three songs and the color of an MP3 player.
