Letter: Not many mascots as politicians or skunks

Most people associate a symbol such as the Chief [Illiniwek] as an attachment or association with power and greatness as to be like eagles or bears and such.

Have you ever noticed that you don’t see too many with symbols or mascots as politicians or skunks? And what if the U or I had had a dancing Jesus or a dancing Budda? There would be issues of separation of church and state. Included in that might be a dancing cow -- which might be an utter problem altogether.

Using Red Grange, the Galloping Ghost might be a good one, but he was a football hero and if you dressed someone up in a white sheet. Well I don’t even want to go there. I suggest for a new symbol for the U of I, a giant “I”. Just about 7 feet tall or so. Painted orange on the front and back with the sides painted dark blue.

It would be gender neutral and ethnic neutral. The U of I already has hats and shirts with the big “I” on them, so no major change would be needed. It would be like the Roman Numeral I (one) also. Being number one is what most people want to be. After a win everyone could chant “I WON...I WON!
