20 Under 40 award recipients to be introduced

CHARLESTON -- A noted business speaker and the introduction of two classes of local award winners will highlight this year’s Community Leaders Breakfast on March 15.
The breakfast will include the introduction of this year’s recipients of the 20 Under 40 Awards, presented for the fourth year to people under the age of 40 who are successful in their various fields.
Carl Walworth, publisher of the Times-Courier and Journal Gazette, one of the breakfast’s sponsors, said the 45 nominations received for the awards was the largest number ever.
“There was a lot of interest, which made the selection process a challenge,” Walworth said. “It shows we have a lot of people in the area who are good at what they do.”
This year’s class includes 10 people in business, six in education and four in government.
The 20 Under 40 selection committee was made up of Walworth; Ann Bacon, vice president at Consolidated Communications; and Jill Nilsen, vice president for external relations at Eastern Illinois University.
The breakfast will also feature an introduction of this year’s recipients of the Jefferson Awards for Public Service, Al Joyner and Virginia Davis of Charleston and Jim Arnholt, Philip Kepp and Cameron Schilling of Mattoon.
The event is scheduled for 7 to 9 a.m. in the Grand Ballroom at the Eastern Illinois University union. Tickets must be obtained in advance by calling 238-6824 and are $15 per person. Walworth noted that last year’s breakfast sold out and added that it’s likely that this year’s event will sell out as well.
The keynote speaker for the breakfast will be John Powers, a professional speaker whose career includes production of the Broadway musical “Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up.”
Powers is also the author of several books and was a professor of speech and performing arts at Northeastern Illinois University. He has also been nominated for Emmy Awards for his work on a PBS series on public speaking, and he founded the Powers Motivation Institute in 1988.
The event sponsors are Consolidated Communications, First Mid-Illinois Bank & Trust, Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Systems and West & Co.
