Charleston headed for regional final

CHARLESTON -- Even when his team was getting its first basket after turnovers on three of its first four possessions, coach Trevor Doughty was shouting “no movement.”

Sometime while falling 15 points behind, his Charleston basketball players sensed the problem too.

“They were playing harder than us,” junior forward Trey Ryan said. “We knew they were going to be a good team. We knew they were going to be a team that played hard like Effingham.”

These visiting underdogs from Chatham Glenwood were playing hard enough that Charleston saw flashes of a season ending sooner than expected in its own regional.

“I was for a second,” Ryan said. “We didn’t want it to end like this.”

So the Trojans slashed their deficit to three points by halftime and took control in the second half for Wednesday’s 66-56 win over Glenwood in the semifinals of the IHSA Class AA Charleston Regional.

Ryan scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half and sophomore Jamel Johnson also scored 17 points including five of six free throws in the fourth quarter when the Trojans made 15 of 17 foul shots to preserve their lead built in the third period.

Matt Miller added 12 points, Ross Hutchinson had 11 points and nine rebounds and Eric Gentry contributed nine points as Charleston, 17-11, moved into Friday’s 7:30 p.m. championship game at Baker Gym against state-ranked Alton.

But this was not without some anxious moments.

“I was just mad becuase I didn’t think we were playing very hard and I didn’t think we were playing very smart,” Doughty said of his Trojans’ shaky start. “And even during the rest of the game we had lapses.

Turns out that Josh Ruffatto was just warming up when he led all entries hitting 10 of 15 3-pointers in the pregame contest.

The Chatham Glenwood junior then hit his first five 3-pointers against what was supposed to be a defense in the game’s first 10 minutes powering the Springfield sub-sectional’s sixth-seeded Titans to a 25-10 lead of fourth-seeded Charleston.

“He got hot early then we started getting a hand in his face,” Miller said. “We got a lot more energy in the second quarter.”

Yes, finally, the regional hosts arrived in their own regional.

Outrebounded 8-3 in the first quarter, Charleston then outrebounded Glenwood 8-3 in the second period with Hutchinson getting six of his rebounds in that second quarter.

“The big thing we did a better job of was rebounding,” Doughty said. “The other thing was the turnovers. In the first quarter we were makking silly passes and lazy passes. On the positive side we kept our poise. We could have fallen apart. I thought Zack Buxton came in and gave us a lift in the second quarter defensively.”

With Miller and Jamel Johnson hitting 3s, Charleston used a 15-3 surge to take the momentum into the halftime locker room while trailing 28-25.

Ryan scored inside to start ther second half and Miller connected on a 3-pointer while going to the floor after contact to give Charleston its first lead at 30-28 one minute, eight seconds into the second half.

The Trojans never trailed again building 43-36 lead in the third quarter and then hitting enough free throws that Glenwood never got closer than four points in the final period.

Ruffatto finished with 23 points for Glenwood, which finished 10-18.

Miller advances in 3-point contest

Charleston’s Matt Miller advanced to Friday’s regional final in the Country Insurance Three-Point Showdown.

Miller hit five of 15 shots to qualify along with Chatham Glenwood’s Josh Ruffatto who hit 10 shots, Cody Traina with nine and Kian Sarreshteh with seven from among the eight shooters.

" As we found out at 2:00pm today, Effingham All Stars have been disqualified from the tournament. Mattoon wins state-but what a way to win. I feel the whole tournament should be void-give Effingham a warning and let them play it out. Let's let the kids decide who wins state and not the Adults who made plenty of mistakes along the way. These boys worked very hard for over 4 months preparing for this and what a comeback they made. They are a great group of kids and a great group of ballplayers. I think the whole thing was handled very poorly by Effingham coaches, Mattoon officials and on up to National. Why were these boys allowed to play 6 ballgames before telling them they were disqualified. It is a hard thing for 12 year old who eats, drinks, and breaths baseball to swallow. "
