EIU football moves up game

CHARLESTON n- Football at Eastern Illinois is to start earlier than expected this fall as the Panthers have announced a slight change to their 2007 schedule which will give EIU four home games before November.

While no opponents have changed on the 2007 slate, one game has been moved as EIU is to open defense of its Ohio Valley Conference title with a Thursday night contest against Tennessee Tech.

The Panthers are to now open the season against the Golden Eagles on Aug. 30, with a time still to be determined. Both schools had an opening at the beginning of the season and agreed to move their game originally scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3 up to the season opener. That leaves only the final game of the season against Samford on Nov. 17 as a game played in November.

If EIU had not been able to move the game with Tennessee Tech, the Panthers were slated to open the season on Sept. 8 at Purdue University, the alma mater of longtime EIU head coach Bob Spoo. This now gives EIU a game under its belt prior to facing the Boilermakers for the first time in school history.

This is to be the first time since the 1988 season that EIU has opened a season with a conference game. In 1988, EIU opened the year at Illinois State when both schools were members of the Gateway Football Conference. EIU won that opener 16-7.

The Panthers are coming off an 8-5 season in which they went 7-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference to win a second straight OVC title. EIU also advanced to the NCAA Football Championship Playoffs, marking the 11th NCAA Division I playoff appearance. The Panthers are to return a pair of All-Americans in OVC Defensive Player of the Year, Donald Thomas, a second team honoree and third team All-American wide receiver Micah Rucker.

Despite the change in game dates, other predetermined events such as Hall of Fame Game, Family Weekend and Homecoming are to still occur on their originally scheduled dates. Game times for the 2007 schedule should be determined sometime in early summer.

" As we found out at 2:00pm today, Effingham All Stars have been disqualified from the tournament. Mattoon wins state-but what a way to win. I feel the whole tournament should be void-give Effingham a warning and let them play it out. Let's let the kids decide who wins state and not the Adults who made plenty of mistakes along the way. These boys worked very hard for over 4 months preparing for this and what a comeback they made. They are a great group of kids and a great group of ballplayers. I think the whole thing was handled very poorly by Effingham coaches, Mattoon officials and on up to National. Why were these boys allowed to play 6 ballgames before telling them they were disqualified. It is a hard thing for 12 year old who eats, drinks, and breaths baseball to swallow. "
