Inside information helps Trojans to victory
BY BRIAN NIELSEN Sports Editor bnielsen@jg-tc.com
CHARLESTON -- Get the ball inside.
That was coach Trevor Doughty's constant instruction to his Charleston basketball team.
"We had to," Doughty said. "that was our strenth and we had to take advantage of it.
"We did a good job of getting the ball inside most of the time."
Senior post player Ross Hutchinson was the recipient of passes inside often enough to score 20 points in the Trojans' 70-53 Apollo Cnference win over Robinson Tuesday night at Baker Gym.
He hit eight of 12 shots for a Charleston team that hit a sizzling .608 from the field.
Hutchinson had 15 points by halftime, junior forward Trey Ryan scored 11 of his in the second half and Jamel Johnson scored all 10 of his in the first half.
When not feeding the ball inside, guards Nathan Zuniga and Zack Buxton found time to add 10 and eight points respectively for the Trojans, who raised their record to 8-6 overall and 2-4 in the Apollo with their third straight win overall.
Robinson's Marvin Washington scored 18 points and Logan Brimberry hit four 3-pointers in a 17-point game while the Maroons also shot well at .582 from the field but still suffered their third straight loss and fell to 6-11 and 1-5 Robinson cut what had been a 15-point Charleston lead at 39-24 in the second quarter to six at 52-46 with 5:25 left to play.
The Maroons got the ball back with a chance to get closer but had one of their 20 turnovers.
Ryan scored on Buxton's assist, Zuniga chased down a loose ball for a layup and Hutchinson scored on a three-point play to put the Trojans back in command 59-46.
"I thought at times we played well and other times we didn't play well," Doughty said. "It was a closer game than 70-53."
Charleston showed signs of making it a rout.
Both teams shot well in the first half, Charleston with a .600 percentage and Robinson a .579.
The difference was the Trojans' aggressive zone defense harrassed Robinson into 11 turnovers compared to five by Charleston, which had the opportunity to hit 18 shots in 30 tries while Robinson had just 19 shots attempts making 11.
That had the Trojans ahead 39-26 at intermission with Ross Hutchinson scoring 13 points and Jamel Johnson 10.
The visiting Maroons had leads of 5-0 and 7-4 before Charleston scored 12 straight points for a 16-7 advantage.
Robinson got back as close as two but then the Trojans had a 13-0 surge before Dustin Reinoehl's basket ended the Maroon's five-minute, 29-second scoring drought three seconds before halftime.
Charleston is to play Friday night at Paris as part of a girls' and boys' Mega Night with the junior varsity boys' game to start at 4 p.m. followed by the JV girls, varsity girls and varsity boys.
