Comets, Rams fall in tournament action

VANDALIA -- Two area teams began their holiday tournament schedule in Vandalia on Tuesday and they both came away with losses. The first of the two was Shelbyville who battled the host team Vandalia and lost 65-52. In the following game Stew-Stras played Flora and lost in a close game 54-50.
Shelbyville began the second half with a 45-22 deficit and with a strong fourth quarter closed the gap to a more respectable 13 point loss.
Jake Elam led the Rams with 11 points, six of which came from the charity stripe. Jay Nottingham had eight points and led Shelbyville with six rebounds. The Rams biggest problem was Vandalia’s big man Eric Hobbie. The 6-6 senior forward was perfect from the field and had 19 points.
Like Shelbyville, Stew-Stras trailed at the half, but the Comets were only down six points instead of 23. Ben Giertz continued his strong offensive output with 18 points in the game. Conrad Widdersheim had 10 points and led the Comets in rebounding with six.
Shelbyville, now 0-1 in pool play and 3-4 overall, is to continue in Pool B competition of the Vandalia Holiday Tournament today at 11 a.m. against Wesclin. Stew-Stras in Pool B as well, took on Vandalia late Tuesday night, but due to deadline issues a score could not be posted in time. The Comets are to take on Wesclin today as well with their match-up scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
