Briana headed south with her life looking up

MATTOON -- Briana Epperson attacked the wrapping on her Make-A-Wish Foundation presents Tuesday night as her barely younger brother, Tyler, and tiny cousin, Corbin, helped -- or ducked out of the way.
There was plenty of wrapping flying through the air from luggage, clothing, a hat, a fluffy big heart, makeup kit and a stuffed toy mouse that Briana quickly named “Pinky.” The mouse and most of the items were colored pink, her favorite color.
“Done! That’s a lot of stuff!” said Briana as she looked over the pile. “Thank you for everything. I really like this mouse.”
Sitting down on a couch in her family’s living room on Marshall Avenue with Pinky under her arm, Briana had plenty of energy left to talk about the grandest gift of all from Make-A-Wish: a free trip to Disney World with her family.
“I thought about it,” said Briana when asked how she decided on the Disney World trip, one of different choices for Make-A-Wish children.
“Yeah for about three seconds,” said her father, Wayne Johnson.
“It was something we could all do,” said Briana, continuing the explanation of her choice.
“We’re all excited about it. It’s something we’ve never had a chance to do,” he said later.
“This is something we all need right now,” said Jackie Johnson, Briana’s mother, who visited Disney World as a girl herself.
For the past year, Briana has been recovering from treatments for Lupus through Carle Foundation Hospital. She was submitted as a Make-A-Wish recipient and approval came through during the summer, said Donna Zimmerman, an employee with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a volunteer with Make-A-Wish.
In many ways, Briana earned her wish through her winning attitude while undergoing blood tests, chemotherapy and other medical treatments that often break the spirit of adults, let alone children.
“She’s always bright-eyed and cheery,” said Delayne Strube, a child life specialist with the Pediatric Hematology, Oncology Clinic of Carle. “She asks to stay until we close.”
“She’s the only child I know who loves to go to the doctor,” said Jackie of her daughter’s enthusiasm during the past year.
“I like it because I get to see Delayne,” said Briana, whose description of Strube was angel-like.
Of course, Briana does not claim that she herself is always an angel by any means. Now feeling more energetic, she can get into fights now and then with Tyler.
“We hardly ever fight, but when we do it’s a long fight,” she said.
Delayne and Briana’s doctors probably look forward to hearing about the “mini zoo” at the Johnson household. The current list includes a dog, fish and two pythons.
“The snakes are cool! I stick ’em in my shirt to keep ’em warm,” Briana said with her eyes sparkling.
And she has offered running accounts of her latest activities at Mattoon Middle School, including playing the clarinet in the band or trying out for the flag corps. Things are getting back to some level of normalcy for this girl even though she still travels to Carle for tests and treatments.
Make-A-Wish is helped by donors to offer free lodging and a few hundred dollars of spending money to recipients. Other donations add to the gift as well.
Employees of the Mattoon Elder Beerman donated money for many purchases in their store that provided the gift-opening party on Tuesday night, Zimmerman said.
“We were asked by Donna Zimmerman if the store could donate some luggage. Then after talking with the associates, we decided to take up a collection. We knew it was a girl from Mattoon and felt it was good thing to do,” said Rebecca Kuhn of the Human Resources department at Elder Beerman at Cross County Mall.
The family’s scheduled visit to Disney World is in December. It would have come earlier, but the Johnson family ran into some bad luck. Briana was riding on the back of a motorcycle with Wayne during the summer when they were involved in a crash. Briana suffered severe road burn on her legs, and Wayne broke his wrist.
“That just postponed it a bit,” said Jackie.
The timing of the gifts was nearly perfect for Briana. She celebrates a birthday today.
“I’m gonna be 12 this Friday,” she said proudly.
And she is looking forward to a lifetime of birthday wishes, too.

Briana Epperson plays the clarinet Wednesday during band class at Mattoon Middle School. The activity is just one in which she participates even in the wake of her treatment for Lupus.
