EIU alumni game opens softball’s busy month
By the JG/T-C sports@jg-tc.com
CHARLESTON -- Eastern Illinois softball’s Alumni Game this morning at Williams Field marks the beginning of a busy month for Kim Schuette’s Panthers.
Coming off a 36-win season and third-place Ohio Valley Conference finish, Eastern is to host three consecutive fall tournaments on the subsequent Saturdays following this weekend’s tilt against the alums. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
Among the former Panthers expected to be in attendance include: Jenny Cervetto (2003-06), Ashley Condon (2003-06), Nicole Eichelberger (2003-06), Julie Fonda-Smith (1997-00), Kari Hagerty (2001-04), Rachel Karos (2004-06), Geri Reuss, Trish [Sanders] Casper (2001-03) and Nancy [Theis] Janenke. Schuette is also a former Panther, donning an EIU uniform from 1997-99.
The upcoming 2007 season marks the 25th anniversary of EIU’s third-place finish at the AIAW Division II College World Series. The team’s 45-8 record that season at the time represented the winningest record in the history of men’s or women’s athletics at Eastern and still stands as a program record for wins.
Eastern’s prospects for the spring are high as well. Schuette continues to infuse speed, pitching and depth into the program through an added emphasis on recruiting the State of Illinois and Midwest.
The trio of seniors n Chelsea Adams, Sandyn Short and Katy Steele n on this year’s roster, meanwhile, is already one of the most accomplished groups in recent program history. They’ve hit more home runs than any other EIU trio and figure to add doubles and RBIs to that list by the end of the end of 2007.
Along with Eastern, numerous area teams are expected in the upcoming fall tournaments. September 16: Lake Land College, Saint Mary’s of the Woods, and the University of Indianapolis. September 23: Danville Area Community College and EIU will both split into two teams. September 30: Illinois Central College, Olney Central College, Parkland College, and Robert Morris College of Springfield.
