Lady Trojans bound back for Apollo split

ROBINSON -- After an opening loss, Charleston cut down on errors and added timely hits for Saturday’s Apollo Conference softball split at Robinson.

Vanessa James was 5-for-6 in the doubleheader as the Lady Trojans committed six errors in a 4-1 loss before sophomore Devan Finley pitched a 3-1 win in game two.

“We also came up with hits after two hits,” Charleston coach Karen Karch said of the second-game win. Finley and (Cortney) Jones had two-out singles in the third. In the fourth James, (Carly) Hunt and (Sam) Vaughan had hits after two outs. I really liked the hitting with two outs.

“We had solid pitching all day long and really, solid defense. In the first game we had four of our errors in one inning. So really in 14 innings we had pretty good defense in 13 of them. We ran ourselves out of some innings. The ground was really soft and I think we thought we were faster than we were on the ground because the ground was pretty wet.”

Charleston is 1-1 with non-conference games scheduled for Tuesday at Danville at and home Wednesday against Rantoul.
