Hynes seeks third comptroller term

SPRINGFIELD -- Democrat Dan Hynes is seeking a third term as state comptroller.

In an announcement at a labor union headquarters Tuesday, the 37-year-old attorney from Chicago said he wants to continue working toward solving the state’s financial difficulties.

“I run because I am convinced the state faces difficult challenges and I must do all that I can to continue a strong record of fiscal leadership for Illinois,” he said during a stop in Springfield.

Hynes, who lost a bid for U.S. Senate in 2004, does not have a primary election opponent. Only one Republican, state Sen. Carole Pankau of Roselle, has announced plans to challenge him next November.

The comptroller’s office writes the checks for the state. Since taking office in 1998, Hynes helped create a Rainy Day Fund, which is supposed to help the state weather tough financial times.

Though he is backing fellow Democrat Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s reelection bid, Hynes has tangled with the governor. For example, he refused to write checks to pay for nearly $2.6 million for flu vaccines that the governor ordered but never received.

On Tuesday, he also criticized the governor’s decision to delay making payments to the state’s pension funds last spring as a way to balance the state budget.
