Public beach set to open at Lake Mattoon
By HERB MEEKER, Staff Writer
LAKE MATTOON -- Pull out the sunscreen and the beach ball because a public beach at Lake Mattoon will open within a few weeks pending a final inspection by health officials.
"We're hoping for opening it in early July," said Joel Pittman, who helps manage Lake Mattoon. "That is all pending final inspection by the state Health Department. But all of it has come together now."
Contractors have spread more than 250 tons of sand on the old beach and divers have even helped clean up underwater debris. The beach, located on the west shore near the north-south causeway, has been closed for 30 years so there was a good amount of cleanup and landscaping for reactivating the beach.
Still, it is a small beach that will only accommodate 50 people. Swimming will be restricted to within 50 feet of the lakeshore. Buoys will mark the perimeter for swimming and ward off boats. Pets will be prohibited from the beach as well.
"This will be more like a wading beach," said Pittman. "But it will be a good family beach. No one under 16 will be allowed to swim alone and boats must stay away 100 feet. That's all part of the state regulations."
Swimmers will be allowed to use bathhouses nearby at a camp group at Lake Mattoon. This is one way existing facilities are accommodating the new beach.
Porta-potties will also be installed and an emergency phone for calling 911 in case of accidents. No lifeguards will be on duty during the beach times from sunup to sunset, Pittman said.
Kurt Stretch, Mattoon Parks and Lakes superintendent, said the beach effort started a few years ago with emphasis by former Mattoon City Commissioner Mark Donnell. The Friends of Lake Mattoon also helped with the cleanup on the beach, and local contractors were used for sand and dirt work.
Lakes Mattoon and Paradise are controlled by the city because they are part of the city water system.
Reopening the beach is part of many improvements ongoing at Lake Mattoon. Last year, an improved boat ramp was opened. Grants from different sources have helped pay for these improvements as well as money derived from a water purchase agreement with an electric utility.
"Lake Mattoon is a great place for fishing and boating," Pittman said. "This lake will be another feature people can use."
