Johnson pleads guilty in Edgar kidnapping, rape
By ROB STROUD, Staff Writer
PARIS -- A rural Kansas man has pleaded guilty to charges of kidnapping, raping and trying to kill a 13-year-old Paris girl last year.
Edgar County State's Attorney Matt Sullivan reported in a news release that Ronnie Lee Johnson, 54, entered guilty pleas in court Friday afternoon to attempted first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated criminal sexual assault, all class X felonies. His trial had been set to start Monday morning.
Sullivan reported that Johnson was sentenced to 60 years in prison and will be required to serve 51 years before he is eligible for parole. Johnson had two prior convictions in 1988 and 1992, respectively, for sex-related offenses.
On Friday, Johnson acted as his own attorney. He had previously dismissed his court-appointed defense attorney, Jeanne Sathre of Marshall, on Thursday in order to represent himself. Sathre could not be reached for comment on Friday.
Johnson was accused of abducting the girl on Aug. 8 in Paris, then driving her to his rented mobile home near Kansas and raping her in the cab of a semi-tractor. Then, Johnson allegedly tied her to a tree, stabbed her several times and left her for dead.
The girl was able to free herself and make her way to a road where a passing motorist stopped and helped her.
Documents in Johnson's case indicate that doctors who performed surgery on the girl at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana could have testified during the trial that she was stabbed four times, with three of the wounds being life threatening, and that she lost a third of her blood.
