Athletes, coaches set to speak at Eastern's FCA Hoops Night

CHARLESTON -- Two basketball players, a coach and former athlete and coach are among speakers scheduled for the Eastern Illinois Fellowship of Christian Athletes Hoops Night.

The FCA and Eastern's athletics department are to be host for the sixth annual celebration before the Panthers' Feb. 26 men's basketball game against Murray State at Lantz Arena.

All young people are invited, with a special focus on middle or junior high and senior high youth. Coaches are encouraged to bring their athletic teams and church youth leaders are invited to bring their youth groups.

The evening is to begin at 5:15 p.m. with pizza and pop at the Lantz indoor track.

Then come games, music and athletes sharing their faith are to prior to everyone attending the 7 p.m. game against Murray State, one of the top teams in the Ohio Valley Conference.

The cost for the entire evening is just $1.

One of the scheduled guest speakers is EIU women's basketball player Meagan Scaggs.

An outstanding high school athlete from Mount Zion, she is now a sophomore for the Lady Panthers and was making excellent contributions in scoring, rebounding and assists until a late December knee injury cut her season short.

Scaggs is to be joined by John McInerney, recently retired EIU cross country coach whose teams have won many Ohio Valley Championships. McInerney has often been voted Coach of the Year by the OVC.

In addition, coach Rick Samuels, the winningest basketball coach in EIU history, will be joined by redshirt freshman Austin Hogue of Tuscola to speak to the group before their game.

Music is to be provided by Mike Beresford, a former EIU Cross Country runner who now is a principal in the Indianapolis school system.

It is very important that coaches, church youth group leaders or pastors contact Tom Woodall at 345-4109 before to the event so that plans for food and games and prizes can be made. All that is needed is a head count.

Those attending are encouraged to park west of the football stadium and walk to the north entrance of the Lantz arena. From there, signs are to direct participants to the north pool lounge where tickets are purchased and food is distributed.
