‘Ashmore Days in the Summertime' kicks off Friday
ASHMORE -- The village's annual Ashmore Days celebration runs Friday through Sunday with a theme of "Ashmore Days in the Summertime."
Highlights include a parade that starts at 10 a.m. Saturday. Grand marshals for the parade are Times-Courier/Journal Gazette Managing Editor Bill Lair and his wife Cheryl, while honorary marshals are Ashmore residents Bert and Linda Coffey.
The parade line-up will begin at 9 a.m. and judging of entries will be at 9:30 a.m. The winning entry will receive a $100 prize from the Ashmore Community Club. Anyone wanting information on the parade contest should call Gail Cole at 345-3492.
Festival activities begin Friday with a horseshoe pitching contest from 5-7 p.m. in the village's South Park. At 7 p.m. Friday, pageants for Little King and Queen and Junior Miss and Mister will begin at North Park. Applications and information about the pageants are available by calling Mandy Lemons at 349-8747.
Other Saturday morning events include the Masonic Lodge pancake breakfast at North Park from 6-10 a.m.; free ice cream at Edgar County Bank & Trust from 8:30 a.m. till noon, except during the parade; and a flag-raising ceremony at 11 a.m.
Many of the Ashmore Days activities are planned for Saturday afternoon and evening, scheduled as follows:
-- Noon-4 p.m., children's carnival sponsored by the Ashmore Parent-Teacher Organization.
-- Noon- 1p.m. kiddie tractor pull.
--1-4 p.m., garden tractor pull at the grain elevator.
-- 1:30 p.m., road rally.
-- 2-4 p.m., bingo at the North Park pavilion.
-- 2-3 p.m., wheelbarrow races.
-- 2:30-3:30 p.m., pie contest open to Ashmore Township residents with a $75 prize for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place. More information is available by calling Tina Hockenberry at 349-8975.
-- 5-7 p.m., Community Club pork chop supper.
-- 7-9 p.m., Touched by Grace gospel group performance.
Festival activities conclude with community church services at 10 a.m. Sunday at North Park.
