Man arrested in connection with shooting of EIU student
By ROB STROUD, Staff Writer
CHARLESTON -- The man who allegedly shot an 18-year-old enrolled at Eastern Illinois University was arrested Tuesday evening in northeast Illinois.
The Charleston Police Department reported that officers from the Kendall County Sheriff's Department, acting on a tip, arrested Steven J. Byrnes, 37, at a residence in that county without incident.
Officers arrested Byrnes on an outstanding Coles County warrant for attempted murder and an unrelated drug warrant out of Kendall County.
Byrnes is accused of intending to kill Terrance A. Williams, 18, when he shot him in the left shoulder. The incident reportedly occurred at 1:30 a.m. July 11.
Charleston Detective Lt. Rick Fisher said Byrnes allegedly entered Williams's residence at 505 Harrison Ave to take possession of compact discs he thought rightfully belonged to him. Fisher said the shooting occurred inside the residence.
Byrnes, a Kendall County resident, was reportedly doing construction work on the weekends in Charleston.
Williams, a Miami, Fla., native who will be a freshman this fall, was treated and released from Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Police were sent to the hospital during the morning of July 11 after being notified of a gunshot victim.
David Kidwell, assistant director of athletics at EIU, said Williams is still on the 2004 roster for the university's football team.
