Dailey goes from court to bench

TERRE HAUTE -- Looking for a job about anywhere, Lauren Dailey did not realize she would get to stay home.

But Eastern Illinois' new women's basketball head coach Brady Sallee has given a chance to Dailey, who the past winter completed her career as the Lady Panthers' career 3-point basket record-holder and 11th-career scoring leader.

"I knew I wanted to be a graduate assistant," Dailey said. "I just didn't know where. I thought I'd try somewhere different but I had the chance to meet with coach Sallee and he gave me the chance. Coming back to Eastern will be a great opportunity. I know the area and working for a new coach will give me the chance to learn from him."

Sallee simply announced Dailey as one of his three new assistants not as a graduate assistant.

"He told me I'd have a lot of responsibility that after a couple of years I'd have a chance if they had a spot available," Dailey said. "I'm excited and ready to learn. I'll get tuition plus a stipend."

Dailey is ready to change roles from teammate to coach with some of the returning EIU players, including her roommate of the past two years Pam O'Connor, who is to be a senior.

"I'm not going to be much of am authority figure," Dailey said. "It will be different. Pam and I are very close friends, but I don't think my role as coach will affect that."

"I wasn't too successful playing as far as a team so hopefully I can be as a coach. I'm excited about the opportunity and hopefully we can change the program around and we can be a success."
